The screen is becoming more useful, not just bigger
We've reached the point where putting another giant screen in a vehicle isn't automatically impressive. What matters is whether it's easier to use.
GM says the new interface has a redesigned multi-view home screen that can keep navigation visible while displaying media, fuel-efficiency information or trailering data alongside it. That's the kind of upgrade I like because it addresses a real problem with modern vehicles: digging through screens just to find the thing you actually wanted.
Yes, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still here
This will probably answer one of the first questions a lot of people have. GM says the new interface includes updated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Instead of completely taking over the experience, phone content can appear alongside native truck functions such as trailering and vehicle information.
For shoppers who like CarPlay but also use their truck's built-in towing and camera systems, that sounds like a much better compromise.
Super Cruise gets a much better visual experience
Available Super Cruise is also getting a new 3D driving visualization. The idea is to show more clearly what the truck's driver-assistance system is detecting around you—including traffic, lane markings and road objects.
That doesn't change the driver's responsibility to pay attention, but making the system easier to understand is a meaningful improvement. And for Sierra shoppers specifically, GM continues to integrate available Super Cruise with trailering.
The towing technology might be the most useful part
This is where the new interface starts feeling like truck technology instead of generic infotainment.
When a trailer is connected, GM says the display can automatically adapt to provide trailering information. There are dedicated trailering views, hitch-camera functionality and the ability to perform trailer-light checks through a smartphone. Anyone who has walked back and forth between a truck cab and trailer trying to check lights by themselves can probably appreciate that last one.
Google Gemini is coming along for the ride
GM is also integrating Google's Gemini into the experience. That means the built-in voice assistant is becoming more conversational instead of requiring you to memorize specific commands. GM previously announced Gemini support for eligible newer vehicles with Google built-in, and this new truck interface pushes that software strategy farther.
How useful that becomes in everyday ownership is something I'll want to actually try before declaring it revolutionary. But better voice control in a vehicle makes a lot of sense if it means touching the screen less while driving.
Should this make you wait for a 2027 Sierra?
Not necessarily. That's a different question from whether the new technology is impressive.
There are still plenty of reasons a current 2026 Sierra could make more sense depending on the truck, equipment, pricing and incentives available when you're shopping. And the 2027 Sierra isn't just getting new software. GMC has already announced a redesigned truck with new sixth-generation 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 engines, an enhanced TurboMax, continued Duramax availability and a completely redesigned interior. The first 2027 Sierra 1500s are expected at dealerships before the end of 2026.

What I'll be watching next
The biggest thing I want to know is how natural all of this feels in person. A feature list can sound great. What matters after you buy the truck is whether the screen is quick, whether the important controls are easy to find, whether CarPlay plays nicely with the native system, and whether the towing features actually save you time.
