What's changing for the 2027 GMC Sierra?
GMC has confirmed that the next-generation Sierra 1500 will introduce two sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines: a 5.7-liter and a 6.6-liter.
The enhanced TurboMax and Duramax diesel also remain part of the lineup, and GMC says all available engines will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
That's a meaningful powertrain change, and GMC has now published the core engine output figures. I still would not make a buying decision from horsepower, torque, fuel economy, or towing numbers alone.
The interior is changing too
The 2027 is not just an engine update. GMC is redesigning the Sierra's exterior and interior and expanding the amount of technology available throughout the lineup.
Depending on trim and equipment, GMC has announced expanded digital displays, new trailering technology, expanded Super Cruise availability, and a new MultiPro Center Console. The Denali Ultimate and AT4X are also receiving significant updates.
Equipment varies by trim and configuration, so do not assume every feature shown in a launch photo comes on every Sierra.
Why would I still buy a 2026 Sierra?
The biggest reason is simple: you can buy one now. If there is a 2026 Sierra available with the engine, trim, equipment, and numbers that make sense for you, waiting for the newest model is not automatically the better decision.
The 2026 also represents the established current generation. Some shoppers may specifically prefer the current 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, or Duramax configurations instead of being among the first buyers of a redesigned truck.
As we get closer to a new generation, the value equation on remaining 2026 inventory can change. That does not mean every 2026 will suddenly become a bargain or that future incentives are guaranteed. Compare the actual truck and actual numbers available when you are ready to buy.
Why might I wait for the 2027 Sierra?
If the redesign itself is what you want, waiting makes sense. The new V8 family, redesigned cabin, and expanded technology make the 2027 more than a minor model-year refresh.
GMC says the next-generation Sierra 1500 is expected to launch in late 2026. That does not mean every engine, trim, package, and color will arrive at dealerships at exactly the same time.
If you need a specific configuration, actual availability will matter just as much as the official launch date.
What engines will the 2027 Sierra have?
When I first put this comparison together, GMC had confirmed the new engine lineup but had not published the numbers for the redesigned Sierra. We know quite a bit more now.
GMC's published specifications list all four available engines with a 10-speed automatic. The exact equipment and availability still depend on configuration, trim, and package.
Now We Know the 2027 Sierra Engine Numbers
The enhanced TurboMax is rated at 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. The new 5.7L Gen-6 V8 comes in at 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft, while the new 6.6L V8 produces 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft. The 3.0L Duramax is listed at 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft.
That makes the new 6.6L especially interesting. GMC describes it as its most powerful half-ton V8 to date, but I still wouldn't choose an engine from the horsepower number alone. The better question is what you actually need the truck to do.
GMC's published specifications list all four available engines with a 10-speed automatic. GMC also publishes up to 13,500 pounds of maximum available trailering for the applicable properly equipped 5.7L configuration. That does not mean every 5.7L Sierra can tow 13,500 pounds. Cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, equipment and the specific truck configuration still matter. Always verify the rating for the actual truck you're considering.
For me, these new numbers make the 2026-versus-2027 decision a little clearer. If you like the current truck, can find the equipment you want and the numbers make sense, a 2026 doesn't suddenly become a bad buy because the new engines are stronger. If the redesigned interior, newer technology or the new V8 family is specifically what you want, we now have more reason to understand what you're waiting for. I am using official GM specifications here, not Canadian pricing or an assumption that every market configuration is identical.
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced TurboMax | 350 hp | 455 lb-ft |
| 5.7L Gen-6 V8 | 402 hp | 428 lb-ft |
| 6.6L Gen-6 V8 | 481 hp | 501 lb-ft |
| 3.0L Duramax | 305 hp | 495 lb-ft |
2027 GMC Sierra Pricing Is Starting to Come Into Focus
When I first put this comparison together, the biggest unanswered questions were the new engine numbers and what the redesigned truck would actually cost. We now know quite a bit more.
Pricing information is starting to fill in across the 2027 Sierra 1500 lineup, which makes the 2026-versus-2027 decision more useful than simply saying "the new truck is coming."
GMC's published starting prices for 4WD Crew Cab versions, including the $2,795 destination charge, are:
The important part is not one headline starting price. Sierra pricing changes a lot depending on cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, trim and equipment. Destination charges and configuration-specific pricing also matter. GMC says pricing for other cab, box, drivetrain and package combinations will vary, and additional configuration availability will be announced as production expands.
That's why I would compare actual trucks rather than model years. If there is a 2026 Sierra on the ground with the engine and equipment you want and the numbers make sense, the redesigned truck does not automatically make it a bad purchase. On the other hand, if the new interior, new V8 family or specific 2027 equipment is the reason you're shopping, we finally have enough information to start putting a real price around what you're waiting for.
For shoppers around Clare, Mount Pleasant, CMU, Midland and the rest of Mid-Michigan, compare the actual window sticker and equipment against the 2026 you're considering. You can compare the Sierra trucks currently available on SmartCarMatch, or send Kahleel the trim, engine and equipment you're looking for so he can help compare buying now with waiting for the redesigned truck.
| Trim | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| Pro | $51,295 |
| Elevation | $59,995 |
| AT4 | $73,495 |
| Denali | $76,795 |
| AT4X | $85,495 |
| Denali Ultimate | $87,895 |
What about Super Cruise?
GMC is expanding Super Cruise availability with the next-generation Sierra. Depending on configuration, Super Cruise can provide hands-free driver assistance on compatible roads and includes trailering capability on supported Sierra applications.
If Super Cruise is one of the main reasons you are considering waiting, compare the exact equipment on the truck you are considering rather than assuming it is standard across the lineup.
Is the 2027 Sierra AT4X worth waiting for?
If you're specifically shopping for an AT4X, the 2027 changes are more significant than just a new grille or interior.
GMC says the redesigned Sierra AT4X gets 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, new Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and a two-inch suspension lift.
That's enough of a hardware change that I'd separate the AT4X decision from the rest of the Sierra lineup.
If you're looking at a current AT4X because you like the truck, equipment and numbers available today, I wouldn't automatically rule it out. But if the new off-road hardware is specifically what you're after and you have the flexibility to wait, the 2027 deserves a closer look.
As always, compare the exact truck rather than assuming every Sierra gets AT4X equipment.
So, should you buy now or wait?
If you need a truck now and there is a 2026 Sierra that checks the right boxes at numbers you are comfortable with, I would not automatically pass on it just because a redesign is coming.
If you are specifically buying because you want the new V8 family, redesigned interior, and newest Sierra technology, and you have the flexibility to wait, the 2027 is absolutely worth watching.
Neither answer is automatically right. The important part is comparing the actual trucks instead of deciding from the model-year number alone.
If you are around Clare, Mount Pleasant, CMU, Midland, or elsewhere in Mid-Michigan and you are trying to decide between buying a Sierra now or waiting for the 2027, I am happy to walk through the decision with you.
